This Week's Review

In my eternal search for unknown sci-fi female authors—there are plenty of men writing sci-fi out there, and I think women are underrepresented in the general genre if we exclude romance—the name Ashleigh Reverie fell under my scrutiny. She’s a British author, independent, of course.

At the beginning of March, I purchased the first novel of her dystopian trilogy, Almost Human. I read it in three days. Then, I immediately purchased books 2 and 3. I read the entire trilogy in one week. While the third book was a bit too hard to digest—no complete review for this one yet—I revelled while reading books 1 and 2.

Here’s my review of book 1, Almost Human: Discovery, published on Goodreads.

Edel, the main character, has some similarities with Kaileegh. They’re both broken in some way, and their relationship with others is not ‘normal’. they’re also more powerful than other people. Similarities and there, though. Kaileegh is a hybrid daughter of two alien species. Her mother comes from a peaceful and democratic system. Her father comes from a belligerent regime, and that’s where she grows up, amongst racist people.

Chat GPT

I’ve been testing it for a few days. Like all technical tools, it can be helpful or it can’t. It usually depends on the user. The other day, I needed the names of all the parts of a knife (not a kitchen knife, that’s not what my characters use to kill) for a scene I was writing. The AI was very helpful about that. So, now I have a pretty scene with blood and proper use of words when describing what is happening. It would have taken me several minutes to find the same thing through images or knifes’ descriptions on Google. It took me a few seconds to ask a question, read the reply, and then ask another couple of questions to understand the differences between two parts, and I was done. I’m loving it for this kind of research. Of course, I checked those words in the dictionary before using them in my story.
